Danelo Cavalcante prison escape: Pennsylvania police warn escaped convict is ‘armed’ ahead of press conference

The manhunt for convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante continues 12 days after his escape from Chester County Jail in Pennsylvania.

The convict escaped the facility just days after he was sentenced to life in prison without parole for stabbing his ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandao, 33. He is also wanted for a 2017 murder in Brazil.

In the latest update, Pennsylvania State Police said the search is now focused on the community of South Coventry and warned locals that the fugitive was armed and that they should “lock all doors and windows.”

At a news conference Tuesday morning, police confirmed that Cavalcante stole a .22-caliber rifle from a home in East Nantmeal Township on Monday, the owner of which fired seven shots at him as he fled.

Police recovered the green hoodie and shoes the prisoner wore over the weekend.

A clean-shaven Cavalcante was spotted near Phoenixville overnight on Saturday. He was driving a stolen white 2020 Ford Transit with Pennsylvania license plates, police said.

Authorities then recovered the van after it was abandoned in East Nantmeal with the keys inside.

Cavalcante stole a rifle from a Pennsylvania homeowner

PSP Lt. Col. George Bivens said Cavalcante broke into the garage of a home on Coventry Road Monday night and stole a .22 rifle.

The homeowner opened fire on Cavalcante and called authorities, but the fugitive managed to flee the scene before police arrived.

Lt. Col. Bivens said authorities are currently searching the area and urged residents to secure their homes and remain cautious.

The home where Cavalcante was last seen is a short distance from the area in East Nantmeal Township where he left a stolen van over the weekend.

The reward for information about Cavalcante has been increased to $25,000

U.S. Marshalls, the FBI and SWAT teams have joined the extensive search for Cavalcante. Police had planned to deploy almost 600 personnel for a “major search” of the search area on Monday, Mr Bivens said.

Local and federal police and the state’s Crime Stoppers have offered a reward totaling $25,000 for information leading to Cavalcante’s arrest.

Authorities have warned the public that Cavalcante is considered “extremely dangerous” and asked anyone who comes into contact with him to call 911 immediately.

Cavalcante climbed a wall at a run from the recreation yard, climbed over barbed wire and then ran across a roof before jumping to the ground – the same method an inmate used in May before being captured within minutes.

Cavalcante’s escape went undetected for more than an hour until guards conducted a head count.

The prison break is being investigated by prosecutors and a prison guard who did not report it has already been fired.

Anyone with information about Cavalcante’s current whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the U.S. Marshals Tipline at 877-WANTED-2.
