Danial Williams targets Joseph Lasiri’s gold

Danial Williams has his sights set on newly crowned ONE Muay Thai World Strawweight Champion Joseph Lasiri.

Williams, who competes in both mixed martial arts and Muay Thai, claimed a dominant unanimous decision victory over Namiki Kawahara last month.

While the match against Kawahara was fought under MMA, Williams has no trouble jumping straight to Muay Thai to challenge Lasiri.

In an interview with ONE Championship, Williams said he should be the one to challenge Lasiri for the gold.

Daniel Williams said:

“I think I should be his next match. I always accepted a challenge – I fought Rodtang [Jitmuangnon] very short term. I know Joseph wants to defend his title and that’s what I’m mentally following at the moment.”

He added:

“I know it’s going to be a nasty fight. Similar style, similar build, similar forward thrust, it’s going to be a contender for fight of the year.”

Williams has three fights in ONE Championship and two of them were wins in MMA. His first foray into promotion was an absolute barnburner against ONE Muay Thai World Flyweight Champion Rodtang at ONE on TNT I in April 2021.

Despite the loss, Williams cemented himself as one of the toughest contenders for the promotion. He is also the No. 5 contender in the Muay Thai strawweight rankings.

Lasiri, meanwhile, became ONE Muay Thai’s Strawweight World Champion when he stopped Prajanchai PK.Saenchai in the third round of the co-main event of ONE 157: Petchmorakot vs. Vienot last Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Daniel Williams says Lasiri is predictable

Lasiri was a raging machine as he beat Prajanchai for the title. The Italo-Moroccan star launched a relentless attack that saw Prajanchai on the backfoot for most of the game.

However, Daniel Williams said Lasiri’s style was too predictable. ‘Mini T’ said that should the Italian ever face the champion, he would keep doubting what to do next.

“I’ve seen pretty much all of his fights and I still think he’s pretty predictable. I don’t think he has anything that shocks me. His constant forward push and ability to take one or two [shots] is like his superpower but I think my game will be a little bit too difficult for him, a little bit too different in terms of movement and technique.”

He added:

“Congratulations and all respect to the new champion. Enjoy it while you can because I’m coming for you and I won’t take a step back.” Danial Williams targets Joseph Lasiri’s gold
