Davion Irvin Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Dallas Zoo Monkeys

After weeks of being on alert, the nerve-wracking incidents at the Dallas Zoo may have finally come to an end. Dallas police arrested 24-year-old Davion Irvin on Friday and charged him with messing with multiple animal enclosures, which led to the escape of a clouded leopard on Jan. 13 steal two emperor monkeys on January 30th.
Irvin was charged with six counts of animal cruelty and two counts of burglary Dallas morning news was reported to the Dallas County Jail on $25,000 bail.
Police arrested Irvin after receiving word that he had been sighted at the Dallas World Aquarium, where they believed he was preparing to commit another crime. Dallas Zoo officials said that Irvin was never an employee or volunteer at the zoo and was presumably granted access as a regular visitor.
A police spokesman told the Morning News that Irvin had already “confessed to some of the crimes at the zoo” but had given no further information.
Irvin was arrested just days after the police posted a photo of him on social media and said they wanted to speak to him about the incidents. The incidents drove the zoo increase security at the facility, which included the addition of cameras as well as additional security staff at night. Officials also prohibited the animals from going out at night.
To this day, it’s not clear why Irvin wanted to get so many animals out of the zoo. Harrison Edell, Dallas Zoo’s vice president of animal care and conservation, said The New York Times that the zoo had been going through an extremely difficult time in recent weeks.
“It was one punch in the stomach after the other,” said Edell. “From the point of view of not losing faith in humanity, how is that possible when these incidents were all the same person?”
