NEWPORT, Delaware (WPVI) — A school bus with dozens of students on board was hit by gunfire Friday during a shootout and police chase that spanned much of New Castle County, Delaware.

It all started when officers arrived at around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Route 141 and East Market Street to report a suspicious person with a gun.

This person fled and shots erupted. A bus carrying 36 students from DelCastle Technical High School was hit by bullets.

The suspect involved in a wild chase and shooting has been identified as 39-year-old Jonathan Wiseman.

“The bus was just shot at. I didn’t even know what to do,” recalls Brendalyn Bockman, a senior at Delcastle Technical High School.

Three bullets hit the bus as police fired on Wiseman after they said he pointed a gun at them.

Police have not confirmed who fired the bullets that hit the school bus.

No one was injured, but one of the bullets hit the bus driver’s armrest.

“I was like just stop the bus, let me check you out,” Bockman said. “I was really scared for our bus driver because he really looked like he was going to hit her in the chest, it seemed so close, literally.”

The bus actually continued to school after exiting the intersection of Marshall and Market streets, where the children were allowed to go home.

According to the Delaware State Police, Wiseman would later kidnap two different drivers and die in a shootout with police on I-95.

Bockmann will not soon forget this day and is not sure when she will get on a bus again. But she wants the driver to know that she saved lives that day.

“I love her, she’s amazing. She’s so cute,” Bockman said.
