Demi Lovato calls previous relationships with older men ‘disgusting’
Demi Lovato has entered a new phase in her romantic relationships.
The “Confident” singer, who uses the pronouns “she/her” and “they/them,” recently reflected on her past romances by sharing some very pointed analysis.
“I think what I went through is I went through a phase where I dated older men and older men,” Lovato said Monday on “The Howard Stern Show.” “I went through a phase where I was attracted to older men, obviously because of my daddy issues.”
Most famously, Lovato started dating fellow actor Wilmer Valderrama when she was 18, and he started dating when she was 30. Their relationship lasted from 2010 to 2016, and in 2015 – a milestone in her sobriety – she publicly stated that she “really wouldn’t be alive today.” without him.”
Without specifically mentioning any of their previous romances, the “Sorry Not Sorry” artist noted that they look back negatively on those relationships, which featured large age differences.
“For me, I was a teenager. And to me that’s disgusting. When you’re 50 and 60, everything’s fine,” Lovato said. “Even 30 and 40, it’s not gross at all. But I think when you’re in those developmental years, you definitely shouldn’t be with someone that much older than you. It’s just unhealthy and toxic.”
Lovato would later add that she has put behind some of the emotional issues that led her to be attracted to older men.
“I can say with confidence that the problems with my father are no longer within me. And I think there are some signs of that,” they said. “I’m essentially with a partner who’s my age. I look back at the past and think, ‘That’s disgusting.'”
The 31-year-old singer then spoke about his current partner Jordan Lutes. She met the 32-year-old Canadian songwriter when he co-wrote several songs for her 2022 album “Holy Fvck.”
“He came over to write one of my sessions and I was in the studio and was immediately drawn to him,” Lovato recalls. “I was casually texting my friends and saying, ‘He’s so hot!’ …Now I’m at a point where I have a great relationship and my boyfriend is a year older than me. We’re growing together and it feels so healthy.”

“If you’re a young girl and you think it’s sexy or fun to date older men, that’s not OK unless you’re of legal age,” Lovato said.
