Denmark Votes to Deepen Military Cooperation With EU Amid Ukraine War

COPENHAGEN — Denmark voted to deepen its military cooperation with the rest of Europe, as a majority of Danes on Wednesday voted to scrap a 30-year-old opt-out option that would have kept the Scandinavian nation from the European Union’s common security and defense policy kept away.

The vote, achieved by a two-thirds majority, fills a gap in Europe’s common defense as the continent unites in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The invasion also prompted the Nordic neighbors of Denmark, Finland and Sweden to apply for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
