Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has admitted to having sexual activity with three masseuses, according to his attorney Rusty Hardin. There are currently 22 civil lawsuits pending against the 26-year-old.
Speaking with Gabe Feldman during a podcast appearance, Hardin said (via Pro Football Talk) that any sexual activity his client engaged in with the accusers was consensual.
“The few sexual activities that have taken place have been consensual. And in our cases, there were only three cases where any type of sexual activity took place.”
Hardin added that aside from the three masseuses, Watson had no sexual activity with the other 19 ladies who had lodged complaints.
“As we have said before, and as Deshaun insisted under oath, each of these three occasions was consensual and instituted by the women. But in the other. . . In 19 cases there was no sexual activity. And Deshaun has already given nine testimonies – eleven now – swearing under oath that other than those three incidents there was no sexual activity and that they were consensual.”
Now that the quarterback himself confirms that three massage sessions involved sexual activity, that puts a new twist on the case.
What this means for the further cases remains to be seen, but the NFL community has a difficult decision to make in the coming days.
Will Deshaun Watson play in 2022?
The sporting future of the 26-year-old is still in the stars. While the NFL does not face criminal charges over sexual assault allegations, it could suspend the Browns quarterback if it believes he violated the league’s personal conduct guidelines.
With Deshaun Watson signing a huge five-year, $230 million deal that’s fully guaranteed, his money won’t be affected should he miss time.
Should the league suspend him, where exactly would that leave the Browns? Depending on who you speak to, the duration of the suspension will vary. Some have said four games, others eight, some even suggested the whole year. A few have even pleaded for no suspension as he missed all of last season.
With only Jacoby Brissett and Joshua Dobbs as backup quarterbacks, the Browns will find Super Bowl hopes should there be a lengthy suspension. But the organization certainly knew that when they signed the former Clemson star.
Deshaun Watson’s cases are still moving through the court system, with some believing the NFL will render its verdict before the season begins. So there is still enough time to gather all the facts.
The quarterback is a superstar and holds the future of the franchise in his hands. But with those allegations hanging over him, the Browns may see him sparingly in the new season.
