Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Episodes 1-5 of Andor. Even though Andor isn’t filled with cameos and obvious callbacks to the bigger ones war of stars Universum, however, the Disney+ series has managed to sneak in a few subtle Easter eggs. In the fifth episode, “The Ax Forgets,” Cassian spends time learning more about Arvel Skeens (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) backstory. Cassian is able to read Skeen’s tattoos written in the war of stars language Aurebes.
One of the tattoos reads “Krat’s Head,” which Skeen says is the code name for an Imperial facility. The other says “by hand”. While this could have a number of connotations, it’s possible that it’s a reference to the assassins of “Emperor’s Hand” from the Legends timeline. If that’s the case, it could mean that one of the fan-favorite characters from Legends is being reintroduced into the modern canon.
The Hand of the Emperor is a group of spies, assassins, and Force-conscious agents who report directly to Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Palpatine has things he hides from everyone, including Darth Vader, and uses his undercover assassins to take out high-profile targets across the galaxy. Will we see Mara Jade in Star Wars canon?
If Disney resets that war of stars Canon in 2014, a majority of the original characters previously created were classified as “non-canon”, including Mara. However, several Legends characters have been reintroduced, including legacy of the empire‘s Grand Admiral Thrawn. Mara might present a different challenge, as Legends’ portrayal of Luke’s life after the fall of the Empire is very different from the sequel trilogy.
However, Zahn has stated that he is interested in finding a way for Mara to return. In a episode of Talking Bay 94 Podcast he said, “If there’s a generic or organic location for them that fits into a story, I promise people I’ll introduce it to the Lucasfilm story group.” Although there have been no updates since then Andor may have dropped the first hint that more Mara Jade content is coming soon.
