LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (WFLA) – The rhinos at Walt Disney World Resort’s Animal Kingdom are getting a new look… they’re decked out with fitness trackers!
Disney is engaging with other accredited facilities across the US to help better understand rhinos’ levels of activity, according to the Disney Parks Blog.
Tracking devices are very similar to those used by humans to track steps and activities.
Tracking devices help animal care workers understand the activity of the day and when rhinos are stable in the evening.
“Thanks to the built-in accelerometer, we were able to track how far they ran and walked around the savanna. We were also able to better track their sleep and nap schedules,” the blog post said.
The trackers also use a GPS unit, which allows staff to see where on the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna where rhinos are most abundant, allowing Disney to better understand which habitat features are most common.
Once research from accredited facilities is complete, it will be shared with all animal care professionals at all 74 facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
