‘Doctor Who’ trailer: David Tennant and Catherine Tate are definitely back

The “What? What?? WHAT???!!!” around the heard Doctor Who The world is still reverberating a few months later as the big surprise transformation opened the door to many questions.

We saw the thirteenth doctor played by Jodie Whittaker in the last five years make her big change at the end of 2022’s third special. But who she turned into was the shocker.

(Warning: Spoilers ahead for the final moments of the Might of the Doctor episode. Go ahead first.)

Instead of Whittaker’s #13, it wasn’t Ncuti Gatwa, the recently announced next Doctor, but David Tennant, the much-loved Tenth Doctor.

Now a trailer teases the upcoming 60th anniversary of Doctor Who begins laying out what happens next, which not only affects Tennant, but also one of his favorite companions and someone who promises to be a very interesting villain.

The 60th anniversary specials, due out in November 2023, appear to revolve around Donna Noble, the companion played by Catherine Tate. In the trailer, Tate’s Noble seems to feel like she’s missing memories, which she is: Onward during her run Doctor WhoTennant’s Doctor had to erase Tate’s Noble’s memory because it absorbed his knowledge, which is too much for a human mind.

We’re also introduced to the villain, a Germanic accent dressed in old-fashioned Neil Patrick Harris, Yasmin Finney, who will play new companion Rose, and another character she may be familiar with who Comic fans, Beep the Meep.

Doctor Who Showrunner Russell T. Davies said on Instagram that Harris “plays the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced.” (A comment on the trailer on YouTube said they hope Harris will play the music master from the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold: “I’ll take a look at it for that.”)

We also see various villains, the Doctor trying to hide from Donna (not very well), and general chaos.

At the end, the trailer also offers a brief glimpse of Gatwa asking, “Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?!” Which, to be honest, we Whovians sometimes ask ourselves. Usually that means it’s a REALLY good episode.
