Donating lifesaving blood is easier than you think

MATCH – Health reserves around our area are extremely low. Only 4 out of 10 of us qualify to donate and of those, only 10% do. One of the largest suppliers in our region is Bloodworks Northwest.

“Bloodworks Northwest is our blood public health organization. We are a blood bank. We study blood and we serve hospitals between Bellingham, Washington and Eugene, Oregon, to provide blood to patients experiencing a need for blood,” said Juan Cotto, Sr., Bloodworks Northwest’s Head of Community Engagement Strategy and Government Affairs.

If you’re making a life-saving decision, there are some steps you should take such as eating a large, well-hydrated meal and, if you’re a woman, perhaps taking an iron supplement first to boost your iron levels.

“It’s a really simple process. Usually, it takes about 45 minutes. And depending on what time they arrive and the time of day, it will usually last under an hour.”

“It’s an act of selflessness. But it takes a lot of time for people to come and do this,” Cotto said. “So we try to make it as unique an experience as possible to keep them coming back.”

To donate, you must make an appointment in advance, however many appointments are available during the day. To book tickets, call 1-800-398-7888 or visit the Bloodworks Northwest website.
