‘Drag Race All Stars’ Rules Explained, [Spoiler] Returns — Episode 1 Recap

Guess who’s back home! No, really, Drag racing fans had to ponder that question after preview hinted that a mysterious ninth queen would join the first winners-only version of All the stars.

So, who stopped this Alexis Carrington-inspired werkroom entrance? As many eagle-eyed tweeters have predicted, the queen under that giant hat is none other than Raven, the runner-up of the two. Drag racing Part 2 and All the stars Season 1. “I define myself as the winner,” Raven explained as the eight pre-announced queens looked on with understandable confusion.

But let’s not pull a joke any longer than we have to; Raven’s appearance is just the setting for a scripted confrontation with Mama Ru. (“Which part of All the stars all the winners you don’t understand?! “)

The jokes, or rather “school supplies”, continue with the revelation that there will be no exclusions this season. Instead, the top two queens of the week will each receive a Legendary Star. In addition to a tip, lip-sync winners can then block one of their queens from receiving a star the following week. (Am I crazy, or is that kind of cute? These queens might be getting along at the moment, but once they start stopping each other, it gets ugly.) It all leads to night. final where the queens with most of the stars will lip-sync contest LaLaPaRUza for $200,000 and the title of “Queen of Queens”. In other words, Mario Party the rules are in effect.

MINI CHALLENGE | In an inappropriate move for Vanessa Williams, no sir, All the stars went with the best first, starting the season with a reading challenge. And because these queens operate at a winner’s reading level, we’ve been treated pretty well with the show. Shea Coulee called The Vivienne this season’s “diversity team”, Yvie Oddly spoke candidly about Raja’s age, Monét X Change hailed Jaida Essence Hall as a “Zoom Winner” and Raja had only one thing to say. to everyone: “DOCTORS. Hey guys! But it was Jinkx Monsoon who most successfully scrutinized his sisters with a series of clever, brutal readings, winning a well-deserved victory.

CHALLENGE MAXI | For their first biggest challenge, the queens must write and perform verses from Ru’s new song “Legends”. And if that hasn’t happened to you, one thing became clear when these girls took to the stage: there wasn’t a single glitter queen in the group. They all have a large Drag Energy, they are all at the top of the game, and any of them have a chance to win. So the performance was great. Hell, the whole episode was awesome.

And you know what else? It’s refreshing to watch a season where the queens seem to truly respect each other’s work and take every opportunity to elevate each other. It might be because they all have crowns, but you don’t get the feeling that anyone comes with something to prove. And even as Jaida admitted to feeling unworthy, the queens rallied around her with words of encouragement. Kindness, what a concept!

RUNWAY | The queens continued to shine on the runway, flaunting various regal looks in “I’m Crowned!” Category. Raja set the bar high in a white Baroque robe; Jinkx seems to have crushed the legs of Queen Elizabeth, the Virgin Mary and Angelina Jolie…; Monet took inspiration from ’90s fashion, starting the look with a tiara in her hair; Vivienne gives off an “earth queen” vibe; Yvie proved that melted crayons can be sexy, no doubt; the judges were talking about the hive of Jaida’s dreadlocks; and Shea led Queen Nefertiti in a gorgeous African ensemble.

LIP-SYNC | Shea and Monét were named the premier two queens of the premiere, earning them their first star. Then a lip sync war – I kid you not – “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” by Ella Fitzgerald. It’s weird, it’s hilarious, it’s… tailored for Jinkx, to be honest. That said, both Shea and Monét make the most of the absurdity of the song to show their comedy ability.

Ru has announced Shea as the season’s first lip-syncing winner, giving her the power to stop a queen from taking the star next week. And that queen is… Trinity!

OK, it was a busy launch. And I don’t even get to talk about Naomi Campbell judging the queens on a surprise walk. Or the performance of “Give ’em What They Want” by RuPaul. Or the mere presence of an angel on earth Cameron Diaz! A lot can happen in 90 minutes.
