Jinkx Monsoon will be a dream come true with their Broadway debut early next year.
Monsoon, a two-time winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” will debut as matron “Mama” Morton on the Broadway show “Chicago,” becoming the first drag queen to play the role, The Times has confirmed.
“I can’t stress enough that this has been a lifelong dream of mine,” Monsoon said in a statement.
Monsoon’s affinity with “Chicago” dates back to her early days as a drag queen. “The first number I did in drag was ‘All That Jazz,'” said Monsoon, who is on a vacation tour of the United States, Canada and Britain with fellow drag queen BenDeLaCreme. “So this feels almost too random.”
Monsoon, 35, also announced the upcoming debut on Instagram, sharing a photo in costume, believed to be Mama Morton, with the caption, “She’ll be good to you.” It’s a nod to the character’s electric solo, “When.” You’re Good to Mama”.
Her eight-week Broadway stint at New York’s Ambassador Theater begins January 16 and ends March 12.
According to IBDB, the Internet Broadway Database, “Chicago” continues its run as the longest-running revival on Broadway with more than 10,000 performances. It trails Phantom of the Opera as the longest-running Broadway show of all time.
The role of Mama Morton has a colorful history, with Marcia Lewis earning a Tony Award nomination as part of the original cast of the revival in 1996. Queen Latifah played the role in the Oscar-winning 2002 film adaptation of Chicago.
Although this will be Monsoon’s first Broadway part, they are no strangers to theater, having starred in local productions of “Hairspray” and “Rent” at the 5th Avenue Theater and “Spring Awakening” at the Balagan Theater. Both stages are in Seattle, where Monsoon – real name Jerick Roman Hoffer – attended and worked at the Cornish College of the Arts A janitor while a student.
Monsoon joined the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2013 and won the show’s fifth season. They were crowned again in an All Stars season earlier this year and became the first cast members on the show to win twice.
Dwayne Cooper, known as Milan, was Broadway’s premiere drag performer in “Motown” and “Hairspray” in 2007 and 2014, respectively.
2018 RuPaul’s Drag Race Star Peppermint became the second drag performer on Broadway and the first trans woman to star on Broadway in Head Over Heels.
