Draknek & Friends has announced a grant for developers from underrepresented groups currently working on puzzle games.
Some £16,300 ($20000) and £4075 ($5000) grants are available from the £97800 ($120,000) pool. Draknek & Friends is giving away half of its profits, with the rest coming from the Astra Foundation, a charity that supports the development and promotion of mind games.
The grant is open to women, LGBTQIA and people of color, and anyone else from a background they deem underrepresented in the game’s development. While larger grants are available to people who have worked on a particular puzzle game project, there are no other restrictions on how the funds can be spent.
Draknek & Friends has made it clear that neither the company nor any of its partners claim any shares in the games developed with the help of the grant. It also emphasizes that the grants are not aimed at game budgets, no matter how large that may seem to solo indie developers.
Puzzle games are a difficult genre, although for the purposes of the grant Draknek & Friends have defined them as “any game that is primarily about logical thinking/reasoning – and not primarily challenging due to execution/time factors”. It’s a broad, but brief, description that will open up funds to many applicants.
Applications are open between now and July 3, and decisions are expected to be made by August 12. The funding program will be among a number of topics covered during the panel. Draknek Direct mini-series will air on YouTube on May 19.
Draknek is the alias of the developer Alan Hazelden who, along with his friends, is responsible for titles like Sokobond, a good snowman is hard to build and Expedition of a monster. The latest release of Draknek & Friends, Fire PeakAvailable now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5.
