Drexel University offers 50% slash in tuition for community college grads

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — We all know that higher education can be expensive, but how does a 50% discount sound?

It is part of Drexel University’s new “Promise Program,” which aims to attract community college students and help them cross the finish line to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Beginning in 2023, community college grads transferring from state or New Jersey will be eligible for a 50 percent tuition discount to continue their education.

“We have always offered financial assistance to transfer students,” said Evelyn Thima, senior vice president of enrollment management at Drexel.

“And if a student is in a community college and wants to continue their education, they can disqualify a private university like Drexel because of the cost, and we think that’s a mistake,” Thima said.

At the moment, the course costs more than 56,000 US dollars, not including room and board.

For those who qualify, the 50% discount brings the cost of participation down to approximately $28,000.

At the height of the pandemic, colleges across the country saw enrollment declines, including the West Philadelphia institution.

This year’s numbers are up 5%.

Thimba hopes this trend will continue with this new program.

“We know that many students who enroll in community colleges typically don’t go ahead and graduate with their associate’s degree,” she said. “Not only are we committed to helping students find a path to Drexel, we really want to encourage them to pursue their four-year degree after completing their associate’s degree.”
