CAIRO — For decades, vendors have been selling subsidized Egyptian baladi bread for almost nothing in the Al-Sayeda Zeinab market, a bustling hub for the city’s working class. One day a month ago, suddenly there was no baladium.

Customers started shouting at Khalil Mohamed, a baker in the city. Mohamed, 25, said: “You should watch the fight. “It’s like a hunger crisis.”
