Elina Svitolina announces her pregnancy, says she and Gael Monfils expecting baby girl in October

Elina Svitolina announced that she and husband Gael Monfils are expecting a baby girl in October.

The Ukrainian took to social media to announce her pregnancy. She posted a photo of herself and Monfils touching her belly, with the caption reading:

“With hearts filled with love and happiness, we are delighted to announce that we are expecting a baby girl in October.”

Monfils also posted the same image with a similar caption on its Twitter page:

Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils get married in July 2021

Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils started dating in 2019 and got married on July 16, 2021 in Geneva. Just a few weeks later, the Ukrainian took the bronze medal in women’s singles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, defeating Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

Things have not been going well for Svitolina this season, as she has only won 5 of her 13 games so far. The 27-year-old was eliminated early at the Adelaide International 1 and 2 and left the Australian Open in the third round.

Svitolina’s deepest run in a tournament this season was at the Monterrey Open. She reached the quarterfinals before losing to runner-up Camila Osorio. The Ukrainian has lost her opening matches at Indian Wells and Miami.

After those outings, Svitolina announced that she was taking a break and hasn’t played a game since. She is currently ranked 27th in the world.

Meanwhile, Monfils, who is ranked 21st on the ATP rankings, has a better record than his wife this season, winning 12 of 18 matches. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after winning the Adelaide International 1. The Frenchman recently competed at the Madrid Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round.

Monfils finished third at the Lyon Open and had to say goodbye to the second round. The Frenchman is among the tournament title contenders, along with Cameron Norrie and Pablo Carreno Busta, among others.

With Svitolina expecting her baby later this year, it will be interesting to see her back in action. She recently told AFP she would skip the French Open.

“Unfortunately, this year will be the year that I will miss it,” Svitolina said. “Right now my focus is on my family and my background (for kids and tennis).”
