Elon Musk tweeted Tuesday night that he was stepping down as CEO of Twitter… if he could find someone “foolish enough” to become his successor.
Formerly the richest man in the world wrote: “I will step down as CEO as soon as I find someone stupid enough to take the job! After that, I will just lead the software and server teams.”
Two days before the Tesla The CEO possessed himself in spectacular fashion when he tweeted a poll asking, “Should I step down as Twitter boss? I will abide by the results of this poll.” During the poll’s 24-hour voting window, the “No” votes were times aheadbut in the end that “Yes” votes won, 57.5% to 42.5%. The next day, he said he would Change the rules of Twitter allowing only subscribers to the social network’s premium service, Twitter Blue, to participate in polls that would set policies that could invalidate Sunday’s poll.
Who the SpaceX CEO could pick next chief fool remains a mystery as he has distanced himself from even those who worked closely with him on the deal such as his personal attorney Alex Spiro and venture capitalist Jason Calacanis. Twitter has had five CEOs since its inception in 2006. Jack Dorsey has twice been CEO.
Musk’s announcement comes as the turmoil on Twitter has infected the biggest source of his wealth, Tesla. Advertisers are fleeing Twitterand Musk has laid off at least half of the workforce of the social network that has the product limped and sued the company. Power users are moving to less popular alternatives such as mastodon. Tesla stock, on the other hand has fallen to a two-year low, and Big investors and former fanboys alike call on the board to appoint a new CEO of the electric car maker. Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion and took it over in October after months from trying to wriggle out of business.
