PHILADELPHIA– Holding on to an ex’s belongings can prove profitable later on, at least if your ex turns out to be the richest man alive.
The former girlfriend of tech entrepreneur Elon Musk is auctioning off a cache of photos and Musk memorabilia from her relationship with the billionaire. Jennifer Gwynne, Musk’s college friend, is selling the memorabilia through Boston-based RR Auction.
Gwynne and Musk began dating in 1994 when they were both working as resident consultants in a college dorm, according to an RR Auction press release shared with CNN. Shortly after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Musk began a PhD program at Stanford, but dropped out to found his first startup, Zip2.
The lot includes 18 candid photos of the entrepreneur as a baby-faced business student at the University of Pennsylvania, along with several other memorabilia from Musk and Gwynne’s time together.
The glossy photos show the billionaire looking like a normal college student before his meteoric rise to success: fooling around in a dorm room, hanging out with his fellow advisors and cuddling with his girlfriend.
The item with the current highest bid is a signed birthday card followed by a necklace given to Gwynne on her birthday.
“Happy birthday Jennifer (aka Boo-Boo), love, Elon,” the note read. As of Sunday morning, the top bid is nearly $7,000. According to RR, the card is expected to sell for more than $10,000.
The gold necklace contains an emerald from the Zambian emerald mine of Musk’s father Errol, a wealthy South African real estate developer and engineer.
“When we visited Elon’s mother in Toronto over the Christmas break in 1994, Elon gave me both the little ‘Love, Love, Love’ note and the necklace,” Gwynne said in RR’s statement. “His mother had some of these necklaces in a suitcase in her bedroom and Elon told me they came from his father’s emerald mine in South Africa – he pulled one out of the suitcase. And because I didn’t get him anything as a Christmas present (and I felt very guilty about it), he said we would consider the necklace an early birthday present for me.”
“I’ve worn the necklace on and off for a couple of years, but for the last 10 years it’s mostly been in my jewelry box (which always reminds me of Elon, of course).”
The necklace also includes two photos, one of Musk and Gwynne with Musk’s mother, model Maye Musk, and one of Musk and Gwynne at a year-end party in 1995.
Tesla superfans can bid on a piece of Musk Orabilia until Wednesday, when the auction ends.
