Empire rises, rebellion forms in Star Wars original series ‘Andor’ now on Disney +

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Andor, the latest Star Wars original series, debuts on Disney+ on Wednesday.

The show delves deeper into the past of Cassian Andor, Diego Luna’s rebel leader character in Rogue One.

6abc’s digital graphics producer and Star Wars fan Bryan Janke spoke to the cast about this highly anticipated backstory.

“We go back five years in Rogue One,” Luna said. “We meet Cassian in a very different phase than the Cassian we meet in Rogue One.”

Luna said that with two full seasons of 12 episodes each, we really get a chance to find out where Andor came from and why he’s so driven.

“Cassian doesn’t even know he’s capable of doing what he’s going to do,” Luna said. “Cassian is a very different man in these early days, and that’s what the arc of these two seasons will show. It ends right when Rogue One begins, so obviously the possibilities are huge.”

In each episode we learn how he became an unfortunate thief-turned-rebel spy.

“How does he become this man who was willing to sacrifice everything for the cause? That man who could reprogram an Imperial droid?” Luna said.

Being able to tell this story extensively on Disney+ was a “gift” to the cast and crew.

“It’s experiencing freedom in a way that I really enjoy,” Luna said.

“It also allows us to go on a very intimate journey with the characters. We get the time to get to know them. It’s unique.”

The first three episodes of Andor are now streaming on Disney+.
