Entire Virginia team to be at funerals of 3 teammates

The entire Virginia Football team will attend the funeral service for D’Sean Perry Saturday in Miami, the first of three funerals for their departed teammates.

The team will also be present at Sunday’s memorial service for Devin Chandler in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Wednesday’s life service celebration for Lavel Davis Jr. in North Charleston, South Carolina. Perry, Chandler and Davis were shot dead on a charter bus on November 13 after returning home from a school trip. Running back Mike Hollins and a fifth student, Marlee Morgan, were also shot but survived.

Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. was charged with triple second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Prosecutors have also charged him with two counts of malicious assault and additional weapons-related charges in connection with the shooting of Hollins and Morgan. He is being held without bail in a Charlottesville jail. A case status hearing is scheduled for December 8.

Virginia was due to finish its season at rivals Virginia Tech on Saturday, but the game was canceled earlier in the week because the players wanted to attend their teammates’ funerals. Due to the tragedy, Virginia chose not to play its final two games of the season.

The university held a memorial for all three players at the John Paul Jones Arena last Saturday, where over 9,000 attended to pay their respects – including the entire team, family members, friends and loved ones.
