ESPN: Philadelphia Eagles’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson out indefinitely with lacerated kidney after Green Bay Packers game

PHILADELPHIA– Eagles safety CJ Gardner-Johnson will be sidelined indefinitely with an injured kidney, a league source confirmed.

A decision on whether to place him on injured reserve has not yet been made, the source added, as they work to finalize a timeline for his return.

Gardner-Johnson was injured in a midway collision with Packers wide receiver Christian Watson late Sunday in the first quarter. He convulsed in pain leaving the field before being carted in and did not return to the game.

Gardner-Johnson was replaced in the lineup by undrafted rookie Reed Blankenship, who intercepted Aaron Rodgers in the red zone early in the second quarter.

The NFL Network was the first to report Gardner-Johnson’s injury.

Blankenship earned a spot on the team after a strong summer and filled in admirably on Sunday night. Still, Gardner-Johnson’s loss is significant for the Eagles. He leads the league with six interceptions and is one of the top playmakers for an Eagles defense that ranks No. 1 in the NFL with 23 takeaways.

The Eagles acquired Gardner-Johnson in August from the New Orleans Saints along with a seventh-round draft pick from 2025, a fifth-round draft pick from 2023, and the latter of their two sixth-round draft picks in 2024.

Prior to this takeover, security was widely considered the most questionable position in an otherwise overloaded roster.

Gardner-Johnson, 24, made a successful transition from the slot corner to safety upon arrival in Philadelphia. He has made 11 interceptions and made 36 passes in more than three seasons with the Saints and Eagles.
