Etiquette expert reveals how to charm cabin crew into giving you an upgrade at check-in

WHO doesn’t dream of strolling onto a plane and “turning right”?

Though it’s become an unlikely scenario, travelers looking for a free upgrade will be relieved to know there are still ways to upgrade to a better seat.

TV etiquette expert William Hanson has revealed the cheeky phrase holidaymakers should try at the check-in desk to try and snag an upgrade.

He told Sun Online Travel: “Getting a free upgrade is very unlikely; however, when a passenger gets a free upgrade, it’s usually because something happened.”

For example, the airline might have overbooked the plane and have no choice but to move economy passengers to a nicer seat.

When this happens, William explained that it’s often frequent flyers or solo travelers who are relocated.

He said: “You’re unlikely to get a free upgrade if you’re a family of four traveling together.”

But for anyone who wants to try their luck and ask, William has the perfect phrase up his sleeve.

“At the check-in counter, you have to tell the check-in staff this phrase, ‘If you need to transport someone on the plane, I can move to the first-class cabin,’ or something that affects.”

“It’s good because you don’t really ask and you make it seem like you’re being selfless and doing the staff the favor.”

While William also said the only way to guarantee an upgrade is to spit the money out, Sun Online Travel’s cabin crew columnist had some advice.

The flight attendant explained it was all a matter of timing.

They said: “The best thing you can do is wait until the end and get on board with the last group, because if you’re the last person then obviously we’ll have a lot more time to take care of you and.” to talk with them.”

It also helps to know the cabin crew because they will try to get free upgrades for their friends.

Cabin crew members and airport staff have been known to give free upgrades to honeymooners and people celebrating special birthdays.

If this is you on an upcoming trip, our flight attendant said, “Your best bet is just to tell everyone throughout the process from arriving at the airport to boarding the plane.

“This includes the check-in desk, baggage drop-off, security guards and of course the gate staff.

“You never know who might be able to help you, and that way you increase your chances of finding someone willing to upgrade you.”
