Explosion Kills Ukrainian POWs Held by Russian-Backed Forces

Kyiv, Ukraine — Scores of Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed in an explosion at a detention center on Russian territory in eastern Ukraine Thursday night, according to Ukrainian and Russian authorities, who blamed each other for the attack.

The Ukrainian General Staff accused Russia of attacking and killing Ukrainian prisoners at the facility in Olenivka, a city in Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine in an area controlled by Russian forces “to hide the torture of prisoners and executions committed there”. The General Staff said in a statement that Ukrainian forces did not launch any rocket or artillery strikes in the Olenivka area that night and that they only use high-precision Western weapons such as Himars against Russian military targets.
