‘Eyewitness to 9/11: Behind the Lens’ tells story of journalists who were there, in the streets, in the air, and in the newsroom

NEW YORK CITY– The images of September 11, 2001 are burned into our memories, the moments broadcast live to the world.

Now, more than two decades later, we are hearing from the journalists at WABC-TV Eyewitness News who were there, on the streets, on the air and in the newsroom, covering the events as the tragedy unfolded, and that captured unforgettable video of the day and risked their lives to tell the world what was happening.

What began as a local newsbreaker on a bright blue morning in Lower Manhattan soon became one of the darkest days in American history and an hour-long streaming special, premiering in 2021.9/11 Eyewitness: Behind the Lens‘, documents the heartbreaking instantaneous reaction of the Eyewitness News team at WABC-TV, with never-before-seen footage from the day and dozens of powerful interviews that rumble with raw emotion.

“Doing my job and documenting it is a tribute to the people who never actually survived,” said WABC-TV photojournalist Glenn Mayrose.

The special takes viewers “behind the lens” of 9/11 to tell untold stories from those who have been on the front lines of news gathering – from field staff and editorial staff to anchors and reporters from Eyewitness News past and present, among others Bill Ritter, NJ Burkett, Sandra Bookman, Joe Torres, Nina Pineda, Lauren Glassberg, Anthony Johnson, Jim Dolan, Michelle Charlesworth, Diana Williams, Lucy Yang, Stacey Sager, Marcus Solis, John Del Giorno, Jim Hoffer, Tim Fleischer and Jeff steeds.

“As for us, we covered it,” said reporter Nina Pineda. “These families, which have never been the same again, have a much, much greater burden than we do.”
