Renard, who bizarrely managed Cambridge in 2004, has guided Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations triumphs.

More recently, he has been managing teams at men’s World Cups, winning fans with his crisp white shirts and sleek haircuts.

Renard oversaw Morocco at the 2018 World Cup and managed Saudi Arabia in Qatar last winter.

Earlier this year, the job in the France women’s national team became vacant after unpopular former coach Corinne Diacre was sacked following a player mutiny.

France’s Renard then quit his job with Saudi Arabia to guide his home country at this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

France’s tournament got off to a disappointing start last week as they drew 0-0 with Jamaica.

But during this morning’s high-profile clash with Brazil, broadcast live on BBC One, many casual viewers who may have missed Renard’s appointment were left stunned.

One tweeted: “Herve Renard ???”

While a second wrote: “Herve Renard is France coach lmfaooo.”

A third stressed: “Hervé Renard leads the French women’s team? This man was everywhere.”

And a fourth commented: “Hervé Renard really is a hustler. I just saw that he coaches the French women’s team.”

Another social media user added: “Renard made the switch to women’s football? This guy will never be unemployed.”

France took the lead against Brazil in the 17th minute with a header from Eugenie Le Sommer.

Ahead of the tournament, Les Bleues received praise for an “insanely clever” commercial.

The promotion kicked off with a series of highlights from the France men’s team before being revealed midway through that they all actually came from the women’s team’s matches, using VFX to create the illusion that the moments from Kylian Mbappe and co. had been produced.
