Feds nudge airlines to make it easier to sit with families

The Biden administration is urging airlines to make it easier for families to sit together on planes at no extra charge.

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation on Friday urged airlines to make it easier for families to sit together on planes at no extra charge.

The department said in a note to airlines that airlines should “do everything in their power to ensure a young child” 13 or younger can sit next to an older family member.

The agency said it will monitor airlines from November and may propose new regulations.

Trade group Airlines for America said airlines “have always worked to accommodate customers traveling together, particularly those traveling with children, and will continue to do so.”

The Department of Transportation said it had received more than 500 complaints about families not being able to sit together in the past five years. However, that accounts for only about 1% of all complaints against airlines, eclipsed by complaints about refunds and flight problems.

In 2016, Congress required airlines to seat children next to a family member at no extra charge, but the Trump administration’s Transportation Department hasn’t drafted rules to that effect, and neither has the Biden administration.

The department said Friday airlines could do various things to help relatives sit together, including assigning adjacent seats when booking or setting up areas for families.

Airlines are increasingly charging additional fees for coveted seats to increase revenue. The 2016 law does not require them to make seat assignments that would upgrade a passenger to a better cabin or seat if there is an additional charge for that seat.

The Department has also issued a Bill of Rights for Airline Passengers with Disabilities, a summary of existing laws that travelers can use as a reference.
