Feeding hundreds of Philadelphians is a weekly mission for volunteers at the R.E.I.D. Foundation

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — “If you’re willing to lend a helping hand, that’s always needed,” said Christopher Williams.

Williams is one of many volunteers who make the REID Foundation’s weekly meal service possible. Every Wednesday morning, hundreds of families line up outside the building near the intersection of Welsh Road and Roosevelt Boulevard for free produce, canned goods and more.

“You are truly a gift from God,” said Sandy Jane of Northeast Philadelphia. “With just a small income you can get food for free. This is a great help for us to survive with our daily life.”

Recipients like Jane say the economy, food prices and the burden of bills are creating challenging circumstances. The REID Foundation wants to alleviate this stress with its food donations.

“The REID Foundation is a non-profit organization that was originally founded in March, but we’ve been doing this for over 11 years,” said its secretary, Maryann Grayo. “We started in the building and got lucky when 100 people came. Last month we fed over 6,100 people.”

The influx of food comes from local Philadelphia institutions, the Share Food Program and Caring for Friends. This is made possible by generous donations.

Along with donations, volunteers form the backbone of the weekly effort. Some recipients even feel compelled to come back and help other families get their hands on boxes of groceries.

“I came to get free food. I started with my car and someone told me you could come and volunteer to help us,” said Suela Dirvishi, who is originally from Albania. “I love helping people and giving the food for free.”

Aside from food, the REID Foundation was established as a non-profit organization to donate Easter baskets and toys to local children and provide nutrition education for individual development.
