Fiji to Join Biden’s Asian Economic Platform as Pacific Competition Intensifies

SYDNEY — President Biden’s economic platform to counter China in the Indo-Pacific region has expanded to 14 founding members after the US said Fiji had agreed to join, a move that came on the eve of a visit by Beijing’s top diplomats in the Pacific island country.

The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, unveiled Monday, represents the US’s latest effort to step up engagement in a region that has become an arena for strategic competition between Washington and Beijing in recent years. While the trade initiative included traditional allies like Australia and Japan, as well as major economies like India and Indonesia, it initially lacked the involvement of a Pacific island nation in a vast expanse of sea that is home to major shipping lanes and fisheries.
