Final Mark Lanegan Footage Shines in Moving ‘Hiraeth’ Video

What is believed to be the last shot of Screaming Trees chief Mark Lanegan, filmed before his death in February, is highlighted in a new video for the mourning song “Hireath,” excerpted from the project. Lanegan’s 2021 partnership project with Joe Cardamone, former head of Icarus Line, Shadow imprint Vs. Joe’s Skeleton.

“The crude definition of ‘hiraeth’ is something like nostalgia or an intense longing for a life, place or time, one that may never have existed,” says Cardamone. TURN of the Welsh word, there is no direct English translation. “When I sent Mark a bunch of instruments to be our album, ‘Hiraeth’ specifically stopped him. We were listening in the studio and after he finished playing, he said, ‘It’s beautiful, man. Are you sure you don’t want to keep it to yourself? ‘ I told him I’ve definitely thought about it but in the end I want him to get it. After he lowered his voice, I knew it was the right call. In particular, his lyrics and melody in this cut really moved me and in a way became the heart of the album. It’s a song filled with unfiltered love. Nothing is protected. No damage involved. Truly one of the most moving pieces of music I’ve ever been on.”

The haunting video was filmed in October 2021 near the base Killarney, Ireland, Lanegan’s adopted home country, after he recovered from a near-death with COVID-19 that left him in a temporary coma. “This was an opportunity to spend some time together and let Mark show me his new hometown,” Cardamone reflected. “He looked so happy there – more than I’ve ever seen in Los Angeles. Surrounded by nature and peace. It’s a breathtaking corner of the world. On the last day, we all decided to visit a side of a lake that Mark had yet to explore. We walked and talked in the woods for a few hours and turned on the camera at the end. I had always hoped to be able to do some visuals for ‘Hiraeth’, but we were running out of time and hanging out took precedence. The footage we ended up shooting was the last of Mark as far as I know.”

These vibrant scenes are paired with images from Lanegan’s life and career, including a 2019 video for his solo song “Stitch It Up” featuring MTV’s Jimmy the Cabdriver character from the decade 90 (Donal Logue, a longtime friend encouraged Lanegan to move from Los Angeles to Ireland). “They say when you go, your life flashes before your eyes,” says Cardamone. “It was really important for me to try to put my love for Mark into this movie. While cropping it, we knew it would be the final image for this collection. I think he will like it. ”

Lanegan died on February 22 at the age of 57 of unknown causes. I said TURN last year of Shadow imprint Vs. Joe’s Skeleton, “More than any other record I’ve ever made, it totally gives me a sense of time and place. Because we did most of it right in the middle of the pandemic, when things were going crazy in Los Angeles and I was getting too close to the sun. “

In the same interview, Mark Lanegan said he is demoing songs for his next solo album, whose status is currently unknown. As previously reported, the artist will be heard on The Afghanistan Whigs’ upcoming album, How do you burn?premieres on September 9th through Royal Cream/BMG.
