‘Finish Liza’s Run’: Philadelphia runners honor murdered Tennessee mother Eliza Fletcher

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A week after a Tennessee mother was kidnapped and murdered while on her morning jog, runners across the country gathered to run in solidarity, including in Philadelphia.

“She is teacher. She was a mother and did something we all love to do,” said Fairmount’s Scott Heigl-Yates.

They gathered early Friday morning, around the same time that 34-year-old Eliza Fletcher disappeared a week earlier, with the intention of “ending Liza’s run”, which she failed to do. RELATED: New details released on jogger’s fatal kidnapping

“I started running in the mornings, which is definitely scary considering what just happened to Eliza,” said Fairmount’s MaryCate Coyle.

“I think people are coming together across the country to celebrate Liza’s life, especially because there’s a solidarity among runners,” said Fairmount’s Ken Flagg.

In Philadelphia, Bennett Brookstein, President and Founder of the Fairmount Running Club, called for runners to gather on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Brookstein was attacked and stabbed last Christmas Day while running on MLK Drive. When Brookstein saw this run taking place in Tennessee, he knew he had to organize something here.

“My friends supported me and people posted ‘Run for Bennett’ on Instagram and now I’m doing it for Eliza. As soon as I saw them running in Tennessee, I had to do it for them too,” Brookstein said.

Runners from different clubs took part.

“Just knowing that there are people out there doing the same thing, for the same reason. support the same thing. Again unfortunate circumstances but we stand in solidarity,” said Omar Nelson of Wynnefield Track Club.

And many wanted to emphasize that runners need not fear for their safety.

“Just the simple act of going out to do something for yourself – and someone just takes it away. We should feel the freedom in this country to go out and do it,” said marathon runner Jamie Pschorr, who is also a producer at 6abc.

“I’m not a morning person so I had to get up a lot but it was important to me to do it and I’m really looking forward to running with a group and just remembering Eliza even though we didn’t know her said Nicole Bieri of Fairmount.
