Firefighters rescue dog from frozen Quakertown, Bucks County lake on Christmas

QUAKERTOWN, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Bucks County Fire Department volunteers are being hailed as heroes for rescuing a dog from a frozen lake on Christmas Day.

Dan Daccardi says he took his 65-pound black Labrador Jack to Brickyard Pond in Quakertown to use the bathroom before a long car ride.

Jack started chasing a flock of ducks onto the ice and ran so far that he fell into the frozen water.

“They’re coming out to save him,” Daccardi said on his videotape of the rescue. “This way boy!” he yelled at Jack.

Daccardi and his wife had called 911 after Jack went in the water and got the Quakertown Fire Department’s water rescue team out.

Two motor’s worth of volunteers came kitted out in wetsuits and inflatable boats to head out onto the lake.

Daccardi says Jack had probably been in the lake for about half an hour when firefighters got to him. At that point, they feared that time was running out.

“That’s when we think about hypothermia like, ‘Please God, please get him out,'” Daccardi said.

“Thank you Mr. He is upstairs! He’s in the boat!” Daccardi exclaimed as Lt. Andrew Snyder and Fireman Dylan Winters safely pulled Jack out of the water.

“He is our joy. We were worried about him there for a while but he’s fine now,” Daccardi said.

Two days after the scare, Jack is safe and happy in his home again.

“It wasn’t your normal call to us,” said Firefighter Collin Reinhart, who answered the call. He says he’s grateful his force was properly equipped for the mission.

“It worked perfectly for the ice,” he said of the dinghy. “I was able to slide it across the ice because it was pretty thick when we left the shore.”

“It is the essence of firefighters and only volunteer firefighters. We are all willing to put aside what we do, regardless of what it is, time with families, jobs, whatever it is, jumping and calling out when the need arises. ‘ said Reinhart.

The department hopes everyone learns a lesson from this incident not to venture on lakes that look frozen over this winter.
