First openly gay player in the NFL announces retirement

Carl Nassib, the NFL’s first openly gay player, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

“I’ve been playing football since I was eight and I just felt very proud of my career. I’ve played a lot of games, played a lot of football, and I’m ready to move on to the next chapter,” Nassib told CBS News.

Nassib came out in 2021.

Nassib commented on his decision to retire on his Instagram page.

“It really feels like just yesterday starting a walk-on at Penn State,” Nassib wrote. “Football has given me more than I could ever have imagined. I can really hang up my helmet for the last time, knowing I gave everything I had.”

“Maintaining this relationship shows that the NFL continues to support me,” Nassib added. “They’ve been so supportive of me over the last two years and I really couldn’t have done it without that support.”
