First ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie trailer shows trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom

It is finally clear what the long-awaited Super Mario Bros. movie will look. Nintendo and Illumination have shared a teaser trailer (below) that offers a look at the computer-animated blockbuster. The clip features Bowser (played by Jack Black) terrorizing a penguin kingdom in his quest for an invincible star. Unsurprisingly, we know who will come to their rescue – Mario (Chris Pratt) abruptly enters the Mushroom Kingdom, while his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) makes a cameo appearance.
The film also has stars The Queen’s Gambit‘s Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, among other big names. Super Mario Bros. is expected to premiere on April 7, 2023.
If the teaser is anything, the creators take no chances. This appears to be a straight forward CG film meant to appeal to a wide audience – you won’t have any flashbacks to the weird 1993 live action film. That being said, if the iconic gaming franchise alone isn’t enough, the top-notch actors and lavish visuals might help it stand out.
