Five cheap ways to keep kids entertained with audiobooks on long car journeys

SOUND BOOKS are a great way to keep kids entertained on long trips or to lull them to bed.
But it can get expensive if your kids are avid listeners. So here’s how to host your audio library for free. . .
FREE TRIAL: Audiobook service Audible offers new customers a free 30-day trial.
You get one book per month with a membership, so it’s a free book for nothing.
After that it’s £7.99 a month, so don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want to pay.
MAXIMUM MEMBERSHIP: In addition to one credit per month, there are plenty of free titles and podcasts included with an Audible membership.
Type “included in your membership” in the search bar, then filter for children’s books.
Free titles on Audible currently include Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, available until August 4, as well as Winnie-The-Pooh, The Wind In The Willows and Horrid Henry.
SPEND CREDIT Wisely: Be savvy and use your credits to get longer books.
Jacqueline Wilson’s Katy was 11:31, while Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was at two hours and 22 minutes.
Both cost £7.99 if you’ve used up your monthly credit.
Also, look for collections, maybe three books together.
Books one through three in the How to Train Your Dragon series can be purchased with one credit.
LISTENING LIBRARY: Many libraries offer digital services, such as the BorrowBox and Libby apps, that let you play audiobooks on your phone or tablet.
If you’re looking for car CDs, check to see if your library has a suitable collection (The Famous Five by Enid Blyton is perfect for a road trip).
MORE FREE: Download free children’s audiobooks from Spotify or librivox.org. To use Spotify, you need to register.
Titles include Frances Hodgson Burnett’s Secret Garden, L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and JM Barrie’s Peter Pan.
