Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Taps Emma Tammi to Direct

Blumhouses Five nights at Freddy’s Film has finally found a director to direct the animatronic horror. After making her feature film debut in 2018 with the horror western The wind, Emma Tammie will direct the long-in-process adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter revealed the new director along with the news that principal photography on the film will begin in February 2023.

Created by Scott Cawton, Five nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) exploded on the internet with its first game in 2014 and instantly became an icon in horror gaming thanks to a unique premise and abundant coverage from YouTube content creators. Players don the suit of a night watchman at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, a restaurant/entertainment venue similar to Chuck E. Cheese, complete with animatronic characters. You are tasked with guarding the location from midnight to 6am while trying to fend off the terrifying animatronic animals Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken and Foxy the Pirate Fox. Now with eight mainline parts, multiple spinoffs and books, the series has built on that foundation, evolving into a global powerhouse, adding more lore and experimenting with the formula.

Already in 2015 a film was shown in the FNAF Universe was originally considered, but since then it has faced numerous problems, changing hands from Warner Bros. Pictures to Blumhouse and going through several directors and writers. Under Blum, the film finally has a script with Cawthon’s blessing, and Tammi is joining the game’s creator as a writer Seth Kuddeback. Work has also begun to bring the iconic characters to life, as Blumhouse has partnered with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop for their animatronic expertise.

Blum has great faith in Tammi, who has earned good grades The wind when it premiered in the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness program. In the years since her debut, she has directed ten episodes of the sci-fi podcast The left-right game as well as two episodes for the horror anthology Into the dark. FNAF however, will be her first credit as a writer, and with the film being part of a popular franchise for so many coming from the biggest horror studio out there, this will be her biggest challenge as a filmmaker yet.

Five nights at Freddy’s is asked for more than any other film I’ve ever worked on and I’m excited to confirm it’s finally happening!” Blum said in a statement about the production. “With Emma Tammi at the helm, we are committed to bringing Scott’s vision of the film to life. Rest assured, the wait will and will be worth it.” Blum has partnered with Cawthon to produce the film, while Blumhouse will produce in association with Striker Entertainment. Russel Binder will be executive producer.

FNAF begins filming in February 2023. Check out an interview Collider did with Blum last year when he previously spoke about both the film and the film Ryan Gosling-LED wolf man.
