Five Standout Games From IGN’s Summer Of Gaming Showcase

This afternoon, IGN hosted its now-annual Summer of Gaming presentation, which featured a plethora of game trailers covering all genres and tastes. Fellow Associate Editor Wesley LeBlanc and I watched the show together and picked a handful of titles that we look forward to seeing more of in the future. Now, this list doesn’t include the show’s hitters like Gungrave GORE, DNF Duel, The Walking Dead, or the latest Aliens: Fireteam Elite expansion, but instead highlights a few games you might not already know about. Check out these great looking indie titles coming to a slot near you:

The last worker

The Last Worker received a new trailer during IGN’s Expo stream today, showing more of the game’s exciting voice acting. Speaking of cast, today’s trailer showcased a huge talent: Jason Isaacs (Lucious Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies), Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin Williams!), Tommie Earl Jenkins (Die-Hardman in Death Stranding), Clare-Hope Ashitey (master of nothing), Olafur Darri Olafsson and David Hewlett. Developer Oiffy describes the game as follows in today’s trailer description:

“Protagonist Kurt needs some kind of break, but he just can’t find one in this trailer for The Last Worker. This narrative adventure explores what happens when humans are replaced by robots in a shipping warehouse in a terminal stage capitalist environment.”

The Last Worker will be released sometime this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC (and unspecified VR platforms).

Roots of Pacha

blank

Roots of Pacha was announced last year, but today’s trailer gave us another look at the beautiful Stardew Valley-esque farming game. It also features more of the game’s extremely catchy music. And to match that, we took a look at the music rhythm mini-game in Roots of Pacha. The latest from Soda Den has a Steam demo you can play right now, and if you use the code ‘Smiley’ you’ll get an exclusive cat hat to use in it.

Here’s how Roots of Pacha is described in the IGN trailer released today:

“Roots of Pacha allows you to build, harvest crops, befriend animals and help grow your village in single player or co-op. This Roots of Pacha gameplay trailer showcases some new elements that you can experience as you play.”

ship of fools

blank

A new trailer for Ship of Fools was released today, revealing that Fika Productions’ naval roguelike is coming to consoles. Also, this colorful and chaotic game features both online and couch co-op. The new trailer also reveals another look at the frenetic gameplay, as well as the many in-game shops to visit and the map we’ll use to navigate these perilous waters. Ship of Fools is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC sometime this year.

Under Oresa

blank

From the minds of Broken Spear Inc. comes Beneath Oresa, a new deck building roguelike that will send players on an adventure in the tunnels beneath the city of Oresa. Each character you bring into the tunnels has different perks that you can use to try and survive the damp and dangerous underground. The new trailer, featured in today’s IGN Showcase, revealed a new boss, a fleshy, imposing mass of monster wielding a makeshift spear, charging out of the darkness at the player character. Beneath Oresa looks gorgeous and mesmerizing. If you’re also interested in trying it out ahead of the nebulous 2022 release date, there’s a demo you can check out on Steam right now.

SacriFire

blank

This JRPG from the developers of Pixelated Milk is not only fun, it looks like it could make a great throwback to classic RPG adventures. SacriFire mimics the HD 2D style Square Enix has been using for the past few years and has that cool new-school retro look that we love to see. It combines both real-time elements of combat with traditional turn-based action to create what we hope is exciting and strategic gameplay. Currently, SacriFire doesn’t have a set release date, but it’s expected to land on PC this year.
