An official said: “They could have caused a pile-up and killed innocent people.”

In an online post, officers said: “Managed to stop five McLarens on the A303 after the pack were traveling in excess of 100mph and driving in close proximity to themselves and the public.”

“This is not a race track, so take your ‘driving experience’ with you and sign the traffic offense report.”

When asked how they managed to catch up with the supercars, Wiltshire Police joked: “Well, they can only go a few miles before they have to stop to take photos of their cars.”

A traffic police officer added: “The drivers might have thought they were Lewis Hamilton, but it was madness to be driving so fast on a normal public main road in such a powerful car.”

“Let’s hope the courts agree with them.”

It was believed the cars were on their way to a track day in nearby Thruxton when they were stopped.

A McLaren spokesman said: “We are aware of this. It was a group of McLaren enthusiasts who were stopped by the police.

“It was not a promotional or testing activity.”
