Flume on “nervous” stint working with Damon Albarn and SOPHIE’s legacy

Flume mentioned working with collaborators on his new album ‘Palaces’, including his hero Damon Albarn, who made him feel “anxious”, as well as photos influence of the late SOPHIE.

Australian DJ and producer, real name Harley Edward Streten, told NME in an In Conversation video interview that Albarn is one of his musical heroes, so he found the experience of working with him on the album’s title track particularly stressful.

“We were both playing LA Life Is Beautiful and then hooked up, and went to a weird studio in the middle of nowhere in the desert,” says Streten. NME about the collaboration with Albarn, recalls that he played for him a series of music.

“I was nervous because I’m a big fan,” he added, after showing Albarn a lot of ideas, “but he didn’t like any of it.”

In fact, it was only the last second track on ‘Palaces’ that caught Albarn’s interest. “He was like, ‘Okay, there’s something in here, that’s cool’.”

“After he went to one of the songs, I thought, ‘Thanks for that!’ and Albarn joining him on stage at Coachella to play the piano during his first live performance. of their collaboration was a “really special moment”.

Flume also talked about SOPHIE, who he worked with on the 2019 mixtape ‘Hi This is Flume’. The late pop creator showed him how to create many of the sounds that would be included on his new record.

“SOPHIE will rock with this tiny box, Elektron’s lone gun, and start making the craziest sounds. Time and again, I wanted ‘How?!’ and she’ll say ‘Oh, it’s that simple!’ and pull a system on my computer and recreate the sound on the software. “

Streten also said that he believes SOPHIE is the artist responsible for the explosion of the mega-popularity. “It is sad that she is no longer with us. I feel like SOPHIE is one of the founding artists,” he said. “She started the whole thing, and her influence is definitely on my record – on so many songs.”

Last month Flume released an official music video for his hypnotic single, ‘Sirens’, featuring Caroline Polachek.

‘Sirens’ is the second collaborative single from the DJ’s upcoming album, due out May 20, which released ‘Say Nothing’ with MAY-A.

The album also features collaborations with Oklou, LAUREL, Quiet Bison, Kučka, Virgen Maria and Emma Louise.
