The federation said on Tuesday that some players were hit by “unacceptable racist and hateful comments on social media” and plans to file a complaint against those who posted abuse.

“The French Football Federation strongly condemns these intolerable behaviors and abuses,” it said in a statement.

French government officials have expressed outrage at the insults. Isabelle Rome, the minister responsible for gender equality, said Kylian Mbappe and Kingsley Coman, both black, were among those abused.

Coman’s club, Bayern Munich, also condemned the racist remarks made against the winger, one of the French players who missed the penalty shoot-out that decided Sunday’s final.

“The FC Bayern family has your back, King. Racism has no place in sport or in our society,” FC Bayern wrote on Twitter.

French Sport Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera tweeted her support for Coman and all the abused players, saying the abhorrent comments had “no place in football or anywhere else”.

Anti-racism group SOS Racisme said in a statement that some gamers had to disable comments on their Instagram accounts because “a spate of racist slurs with hundreds of users posting comments on the social network linking them to monkeys, slaves or even urge them to go back into the jungle.”

The NGO said it would file a complaint.

France twice fought their way to a 3-3 overtime draw in Qatar before Argentina won a penalty shoot-out to cap one of the most exciting finals in World Cup history. Coman had saved a try by Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Aurelien Tchouameni then missed for France.

Despite missing out on defending their world title in Russia in 2018, the French team returned to Paris on Monday night, where thousands of fans cheered them on during a performance at Place de la Concorde. France federation condemns racist abuse of Mbappe, Coman
