PARIS — President Emmanuel Macron of France appointed Elisabeth Borne as prime minister, putting the first woman in decades to lead the French government and lead his party in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Borne’s choice – a 61-year-old technocrat who previously served as Mr Macron’s labor minister – shows the pro-business president leaning to the left before voters go to the polls in the middle June to elect members of the National Assembly. . Miss Borne was the director of Ségolène Royala Socialist Party heavyweight who ran a famous but unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2007.
