French Grand Prix Carlos Sainz, Kevin Magnussen to start from back of grid

LE CASTELLET, France — Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen will start from the back of the grid at the French Grand Prix due to engine penalties.

Sainz was already expected to lose ten places on the grid after exceeding his quota of powertrain control electronics on Friday but will now drop to the last row after Ferrari fitted a new engine, turbocharger, MGU-K and MGU-. H to his car before the final practice session on Saturday.

Sainz lost one of his power units for the season in a fire at the Austrian Grand Prix, forcing him to retire from a likely second place finish. Only three engines, three turbochargers, three MGU-H components and three MGU-K are permitted per driver. Exceeding this number will result in a grid penalty.

The Ferrari power unit in Magnussen’s Haas has also been replaced, meaning he will fall to the back of the grid alongside Sainz.

Whoever qualifies best between Magnussen and Sainz starts in 19th place, the other in 20th place.
