French Interior Minister Apologizes After Chaos at Champions League Final

PARIS — French lawmakers have grilled the country’s top law enforcement official over police treatment of football fans outside of Saturday’s Champions League final near Paris, upping the episode’s political stakes less than two weeks before the general election that will see the Support for the President is being tested Emmanuel Macron.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin apologized for what he described as the disproportionate use of tear gas on fans, including around children, and said action was being taken against police in response. He said France would also help people who had traveled from the UK or Spain to lodge complaints against French police from their home countries if they wished to do so.
