French President Emmanuel Macron, No Longer Omnipotent, Now Needs Allies

PARIS – President Emmanuel Macron cast off the exalted mantle of Jupiter. The French leader, who once likened the country’s presidency to the king of the Roman gods, spent much of his first term insensitive to political opposition, issuing directives and inviting limited debate. For his second five-year term, he has chosen a lesser god as his new model of government.

“Vulcan, with the forge,” said Mr. Macron in a recent television interview, referring to the god of fire and metalworking, the patron saint of blacksmiths.
