Frontline Ukraine troops are reportedly enduring Starlink outages

The armed forces are reportedly struggling with sorties as they try to retake Russian-held areas. Some of the outages, which are said to have caused a severe loss of communications in recent weeks, occurred as troops broke through the front line into Russian-controlled territory and during fighting, a Ukrainian government official said .

The cause of the apparent failures are not yet known. Engadget has reached out to Starlink owner SpaceX for comment.

Starlink outages have been reported in the four regions Russia annexed last month following referendums whose legitimacy has been disputed. As the financial times notes that there is a significant Ukrainian counter-offensive in these areas.

Some terminals are said to have failed to work in areas near Khariv, which Ukraine has amid a push into Luhansk, one of Russia’s claimed regions. However, according to the report, military officials this week claimed that Starlink terminals were operating in newly liberated areas east of Izyum and south of Kherson.

Ukrainian troops use the terminals to keep in touch, pilot drones and receive intelligence while stationed in parts of the country that lack other secure networking options. Shortly after the Russian invasion, SpaceX sent to Ukraine, for both military and civilian purposes.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk warned Ukrainians against using Starlink. The researchers indicated that Russia could potentially use signals from the terminals for targeting purposes. Meanwhile, Musk was in Ukraine and among the country’s allies this week when he proposed referendums should be held to set the border between Russia and Ukraine. He also claimed SpaceX needs to support Ukraine via Starlink.
