It will soon be available on prescription through Boots to thousands suffering from obesity.

The vaccine was developed to treat type 2 diabetes and contains the drug semaglutide, which is hailed for its appetite-suppressing effects.

Studies show that it has helped a third of people reduce their weight by 20 percent.

Helen Knight, director of drug evaluation at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, said, “For some people, losing weight is a real challenge, which is why a drug like semaglutide is a welcome option.”

Wegovy is available privately for £130 and is issued at a standard prescription fee of £9.35, with the NHS paying the rest.

It will go to patients with a BMI of at least 35 who suffer from weight-related diseases.

The weekly injection works by suppressing appetite – mimicking a naturally occurring hormone released after eating.

Obesity costs the NHS £6 billion a year.

Telly GP Sarah Jarvis said: “It’s not a silver bullet. But it helps, no question.

“It can be the nudge in the right direction that they need.”
