Germantown hit-and-run: Woman on sidewalk struck and killed; Philadelphia police say 4 people fled the scene

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A woman was on a sidewalk in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia Thursday night when she was hit and killed by a runaway SUV.

Police say four people ran away from the suspicious vehicle and left them there.

It happened just after 11pm on Thursday night on Greene Street in West Coulter

Police say a white Chevy SUV traveling north on Greene ran into oncoming traffic, jumped the curb and crashed into a utility pole.

The Chevy continued down the sidewalk where it hit the woman. Police said the vehicle traveled another 50 feet before descending the curb again and coming to a stop in front of the Germantown Friends School.

“According to the witness, four people got out of the vehicle and fled north on foot. We have no description of the four people who fled,” said Scott Small, chief inspector of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Arriving police and paramedics found that the victim was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead.

“This woman didn’t stand a chance. It’s a real tragedy. She was dragged – we think about 15 feet – and possibly run over by this Chevy SUV because she had serious injuries,” Small said.

Police are working to identify the victim. She didn’t have her ID with her when she was hit. She wore a smock and was possibly in her forties or fifties.

The police checked the number plate and know who the vehicle is registered to. It is towed to the confiscated property for a search.
