Giannis Antetokounmpo unveils new Zoom Freak 4 sneaker

Following the premiere of the Disney+ movie Rise last week, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo unveiled his latest Nike signature shoe, the Zoom Freak 4.

Introduced in a launch colorway that features a layered upper that mixes salmon and neon tones alongside anthracite and gray, the shoe is highlighted by its sizeable inverted Nike swoosh that extends upwards from the pivoting midsole.

Stylized in the company’s distinctive 50-year-old logo is a motivational quote: “The One Who Believed would Become The Unbelievable.”

After signing a long-term renewal with Nike, Antetokounmpo defined the approach and foundation that each model in his signature series would represent during early brainstorming sessions with designers in Fall 2017.

“I wanted a good looking shoe that could tell a story that a kid could relate to,” he outlined Andscape’s Aaron Dodson.

The branding of the series was a model-by-model exploration, design-wise, inspired by Antetokounmpo’s nickname “Greek Freak” and his unique playstyle.

The Freak 1 featured a sizable inverted Swoosh that nestled into the heel and extended through the midsole. The second sneaker featured an oversized Swoosh that seemingly took up as much space as possible on the side of the shoe. The Freak 3, which included a support strap for the first time, had a more subtly outlined Swoosh along the collar.

The Freak 4 also features dual-unit Zoom Air cushioning in the forefoot and Nike React foam in the heel, offering more tech than last year.

When Nike launched the Zoom Freak series with a lavish press event in Greece in 2019, the Bucks franchise player was on the verge of winning his first NBA Most Valuable Player award. He was also the first European player to receive a Nike signature basketball shoe.

While creating his signature series, Giannis has often incorporated stories about his humble beginnings in Greece, his family’s Nigerian background, and the goal he and his brothers shared to one day make it to the NBA.

“I wanted my shoe to basically introduce me and my family to the world,” he said.

Each of his shoes bears the names of his three brothers – Thanasis, Kostas and Alex – along with a reference to his parents, often stylized as “Charles + Veronica” on the bottom. While Giannis won’t be lacing his latest shoes on court until October, the Zoom Freak 4 is expected to release soon this summer. Giannis Antetokounmpo unveils new Zoom Freak 4 sneaker
