Giroud overtakes Henry as France’s all-time goal scorer

Olivier Giroud has overtaken Thierry Henry to become France’s all-time leading scorer at 52nd place Les Bleus in the World Cup Round of 16 match against Poland on Sunday.

Giroud conceded a pass from Kylian Mbappe in the 44th minute and sent a low left-footed shot past Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, his former Arsenal team-mate.

The AC Milan striker had equalized Henry’s record 51 goals for the national team in France’s 4-1 win over Australia in their Group D World Cup opener earlier in the tournament.

Giroud, 36, became France’s oldest goalscorer with his header in the 2-0 win over Austria on September 22 which brought him within two goals of the record while his brace against the Socceroos in Qatar overtook Zinedine Zidane as the oldest His country’s goalscorer at a World Cup.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker is now his country’s top scorer, followed by Henry, who scored 51 goals in 123 caps between 1997 and 2010. Antoine Griezmann has 42 goals, Michel Platini 41 and Karim Benzema 37.

Giroud made his France debut aged 25 in 2011, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against USA and scoring his first international goal against Germany a year later.

Since then he has scored 51 goals in 117 appearances for the national team and helped Didier Deschamps’ side win the 2018 World Cup despite failing to score in the finals.

His presence in the France squad, doubtful ahead of the World Cup, was a godsend for Deschamps after Benzema was ruled out by injury before the first game.

Giroud has enjoyed a glittering career at club and international level, winning Ligue 1, Serie A, Champions League, Europa League and four FA Cup titles with Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan.
