PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — In the spirit of the holiday season, Giving Tuesday is all about helping those less fortunate: by being generous, by volunteering or by donating to local charities.
The Pennsylvania SPCA says Giving Tuesday is a big day for the 50,000 animals they help each year.
“We see animals that are starving, abandoned, dog fighting, breeding farms,” said Deborah Bowles, the PSCPA’s chief development officer. “We go in and investigate cases of cruelty and neglect most of these animals, their length of stay is quite long, their medical needs are extensive. So these donations help support all of the emergency medical care that is needed.”
GivingTuesday Data Commons estimates that 35 million US adults participated in GivingTuesday last year, raising $2.7 billion.
On Tuesday at Subaru Park, the Philadelphia Union partnered with the organization Sharing Excess to donate food to those in need.
“Food insecurity is a really big problem across the country, but especially here in Chester,” said Allie Gentile, director of community relations at the Philadelphia Union.
“So we like to do whatever we can to save at least a little bit of what money a family might spend on a grocery budget, and prefer to get that food for free and use it for gifts or supplies for their kids,” Evan said Ehlers, Founder and Managing Director of Sharing Excess.
6abc has partnered with Philabundance in the fight against hunger.
Philabundance serves 135,000 people a week, delivering food to people in the five counties in Philadelphia and four counties in New Jersey.
“Each year, 6abc and The Walt Disney Company, our parent company, support food banks across our country through Feeding America,” said Bernie Prazenica, President and General Manager of 6abc.
The 6abc Dunkin’ Holiday Food Drive raised $26,386 in donations and Disney gave a $25,000 check for a total of more than $50,000.
